CHANDIGARH: Security for students and employees on Panjab University campus remains a problem. On Thursday, according to eyewitnesses, a gunshot rang out of PU campus, but instead of taking responsibility of students safety, the PU top brass started blaming Chandigarh Police. It is obvious that the PU officials have learned nothing from the November 6 incident, when student leader Brinder Dhillon was attacked right outside the vice-chancellors residence inside PU premises.
After every such incident, PU officials come up with a set of steps to curb violence.
Following November 6 incident, the PU top brass had announced they would beef up security and install CCTV cameras at different locations inside the campus. However, nothing of the sort has been done. And V-C RC Sobti is busy playing blame games.
In June 2008, a high-powered committee of PU including SS Virdi, RK Sharma and others decided to install electric drop gates and time-offices at all the three gates of the university. It was decided that time-offices will have security personnel who would keep a check on all those entering the campus.
It was also decided that any outsider entering the campus would be required to deposit his/her driving license or registration certificate at the gate. And after nine months of all these decisions, nothing to that effect has been done. When DSW Naval Kishore was asked about the status of drop gates, as expected he said, They will start functioning soon.
Also, PU had decided that in future all the parties would work together in close liaison for maintaining harmony, amity and peace to ensure congenial atmosphere. Orientation programmes for the students leader will be organized and a counselling committee would be formed to counsel them regularly. But unfortunately, till now, not even a single student has been counselled and no meeting of the committee has been done.
